Medical Device Manufacturing Case Study

Issue: A large Southwest US pharmaceutical and medical device company had a small percentage of lower-quality parts reaching their markets. They were interested in an in-line test method to insure that only the highest quality devices move beyond the beginning stages of production.

Solution: Through the use of partial least squares-discriminate analysis modeling, InvenGen was able to isolate product configuration factors that were strongly correlated. A novel method was devised to combine different types of data streams and create models of the product that explained 94% of the model's variability.

Result: The resulting models were able to classify non-conforming product from production with exceptional accuracy. The models demonstrated excellent ability in discriminating profile and surface features. Even though the results represent the efforts of this project's first stage, estimates project hundreds of thousands of dollars of savings in inspection labor, scrap reduction through further process improvements and increased customer satisfaction.

Medical Device Component Manufacturer Case Study

Issue: A mid-sized manufacturer who supplies component parts to large OEMs was looking to expand its markets to medical devices. In need of a specific manufacturing fabrication technology, this company engaged InvenGen to survey available processes to enable the technology for them. Compounding the challenge was the need for this company to demonstrate their capability to make parts with this technology within three months.

Solution: InvenGen drew on its extensive manufacturing process expertise, surveyed equipment manufacturers and prepared recommendations which included business as well as the technical aspects surrounding the assimilation of this technology.

Result: InvenGen was able to identify several candidate technologies and quickly make suggestions for the best process. During the discussions about acceptable solutions, it was discovered that the manufacturer already had a piece of equipment that could be modified to meet the short term prototyping needs and help them move rapidly towards this market.
